I just love this webpage. It amazes me that sometimes the smallest markets, like PVR and compressed audio players (ie, iPod), which sell single digit millions or so a year, get all the publicity. The hottest items, from a mindshare perspective, are not necessarily the ones driving any real business in the consumer electronics space. Mind you, though, some of them are leading the way with innovations and helping us achieve the first steps in mass market acceptance.
Poor TiVo. After the SJ Merc basically wrote an obituary last week (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/business/technology/10698373.htm), it is getting harder to hold out up for the beloved company. Clearly, TiVo's core competency is it's software. My exit strategy for the company is to sell off said brand and GUI, plus market insight and so on, to a big technology company that has a chance in delivering next generation services and boxes to the masses. If I was, say, Intel, maybe Broadcom, possibly Scientific Atlanta, or more renegade, Akimbo, or a stalwart Comcast etc etc., I'd be in talks right this moment, hoping to snap it up and put it to good use, before TiVo flushes itself down into the Alviso marsh beyond the point of relevancy.
